If you have ever wondered how only a couple of layers of lightweight fabric can keep you dry and comfortable through even the most challenging conditions, it’s thanks to the talent of people like Helen Kilner.

As clothing design manager at Sunderland-based outdoor products company Berghaus (part of Pentland Brands Ltd), Helen is a specialist in creating innovative gear from the very latest technical fabrics. 

Every season, Helen and her team develop and test cutting edge products which will help people make the most of their outdoor experience – whether this is a bit of weekend mountain biking or, as in the case of mountaineer, Alan Hinkes, a record attempt to climb his fourteenth and final 8000 metre peak.

Helen shares the passion of Berghaus founders Peter Lockey and Gordon Davison for creating high quality, functional gear that is always a step ahead of the competition. Thanks to this passion, hundreds of thousands of people every year can enjoy the great outdoors in comfort and safety.

Hadrian’s Wall

Built nearly 2000 years ago, Hadrian’s Wall marked the northernmost boundary of the Roman Empire and for over 250 years separated the Romans from the skirmishing Barbarians.

Stretching for 73 miles, from Wallsend in the east to Bowness on Solway in the west, Hadrian’s Wall was constructed in a staggering six years.  It was to become the most important Roman structure built in Britain as well as the best-known frontier in the whole of the Roman Empire.

Today parts of the Wall are still visible.  Studded with forts, temples and turrets, Hadrian’s Wall lies amidst some of Britain’s most breathtaking scenery and attracts many thousands of visitors from all over the world every year.

Indeed its international importance was officially recognised in 1987, when Hadrian’s Wall was proclaimed as a World Heritage Site.
